  • In comparison to the other antagonists in Diablo 4, Lilith possesses a significantly higher level of sympathy

  • Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred, is the offspring of the Prime Evil Mephisto, who is also a brother of Diablo himself

  • Unlike the rest of her demonic family members, Lilith's goal is not simply to conquer Sanctuary, the world inhabited by humans, in order to enslave or destroy it

  • Instead, Lilith wants the world to serve as a refuge for those who are trying to escape the conflict that is raging between Heaven and Hell

  • This is precisely why she and her ex-boyfriend, the Angel Inarius, created the world in the first place

  • However, the majority of people don't share her conception of what constitutes safety

Even though the conclusion of the game stokes this fear, we are of the opinion that using a demon princess to fight a demon king only risks creating Hell on Earth, or Sanctuary, as the case may be.

Diablo, himself, continues to be the most dangerous foe in this series.

If we go all the way back to the beginning to explain a condensed version of the history of Diablo lore, we will find that Lilith and Inarius, a demon and an angel respectively, fell in love and then turned their backs on their own kind. Instead of engaging in what would become known as the Eternal Conflict, they chose to. The two individuals came to the conclusion that they needed a place apart from Heaven and Hell to call their own. Their offspring evolved into demonic and angelic hybrids known as Nephalem, which were reviled by the armies of both Heaven and Hell and brought to the brink of extinction as a result of this persecution.

After Lilith realized that her Nephalem children possessed incredible strength, she devised a plan to use them as superweapons against Heaven and Hell. She then declared war on both realms and used her children as her armies in the conflict. Her rage caused her to become progressively more despotic and demonic, and it posed a threat to all of reality. Lilith's goals in the beginning were admirable; she wanted to protect her family and live in peace. However, over time, she evolved into the very thing she detested, and despite her best efforts to avoid the Eternal Conflict, she ended up becoming one of its most ruthless adversaries.

When Inarius realized that he had no other option, he sealed her away in a deep pit, and then he fled to Sanctuary, where he eventually established a religion centered on himself. Over the course of time, he would develop a strong desire to go back to Heaven, but his fellow angels would not have him there. Meanwhile, on Sanctuary, Lilith's cult would expand as her offspring developed into humans.

Lilith wants to protect Sanctuary from being destroyed by Hell, but who will protect Sanctuary from Lilith?

The strategy that Lilith developed to defend Sanctuary against Diablo

When Lilith reappears in Diablo 4, her followers break her out of the dark prison she was held in and she immediately continues where she left off. In light of the fact that the world has been subjected to repeated assaults at the hands of the demonic Prime Evils or even by renegade angels like Malthael, Lilith decides to unleash her own demonic army on Sanctuary in an effort to bring it under her control. However, in order to protect her world from incursions by the Prime Evils, such as Diablo, Baal, and her father Mephisto, Lilith first intends to invade and conquer Hell. Only then will she turn her attention to protecting her world.

Her line of thinking is that if she is successful in capturing both Hell and Sanctuary, then Hell will no longer be able to threaten Sanctuary, and she will then be able to systematically eradicate or at the very least contain the Prime Evils. It's important to note that Lilith doesn't appear to be too concerned with fighting the armies of Heaven. This is probably because those armies were greatly diminished during Diablo 3, when the Lord of Terror himself smashed down their Pearly Gates and went on a rampage, so Lilith probably doesn't see much point in fighting them.

The reasoning that Lilith presents is sound, but there is a catch. A far cry from her original vision of Sanctuary as something free from Hell's taint, she would essentially be turning Sanctuary into her own personal dominion of Hell if she did this. Both Lilith and Inarius brought a sense of equilibrium to the discussion, which contributed to the conclusion that Sanctuary was a sound concept despite its opposition to the Eternal Conflict. Both Lilith and Inarius have become cynical and morally bankrupt as a result of their own crusades, and neither of them can recognize the fact that they have already achieved their goal of establishing a world that is distinct from their violent past. They need only refrain from interfering with it in any way.

Both of them would be better served if they formed an alliance with humanity and fought on their behalf if they truly wanted to protect Sanctuary. Instead of trying to dominate humanity and establish themselves as an overlord, it would be more beneficial. In spite of the fact that Heaven no longer sees humanity as a threat due to the fact that in Diablo 3 they finally acknowledge their potential, Heaven does not accept Inarius. Inarius is simply using humanity as a tool to get back to Heaven, and Lilith is not aware that she is being consumed by hatred, which is an ironic twist on the fact that she is the daughter of the Lord of Hatred. Both of them are driven by their own selfish desires, but Inarius is more straightforward about his motivations than Lilith is.

In the end, Lilith is vanquished because of the demonic nature she possesses. Despite the fact that she believes she is helping others and that her strategies may even be successful, she is simply behaving in a malicious manner and bringing misery and destruction upon others, as is typical of demons. Lilith is unable to flee the Eternal Conflict, which causes her to fail in her mission to protect Sanctuary for a second time. Her children, humanity, are unable to avoid it either because it is an inherent component of them. On the other hand, they have the ability to put up a fight against it.

The conclusion of Diablo 4 gives a strong hint that Diablo and the other Prime Evils will appear again in future games. At the conclusion of the game, a stained glass window painting of Diablo literally and figuratively looms over Lilith, and Mephisto has already made his way back into the world of humans. However, when these demonic villains once again show their spikey faces, there will be a band of heroes ready and waiting to face them head-on. The Nephalem will return in some form or another, whether they be barbarians, necromancers, druids, rogues, sorcerers, or any of the other various classes of warriors. This is due to the fact that protecting Sanctuary has never been Lilith's destined role; rather, it is humanity's.
